In most cases there is a 30 day waiting period for coverage to begin so don't wait for a pending disaster.

Remember that supplies can be hard to get when a hurricane is approaching. That is one reason why you should prepare in advance. For example, if you would want to cover windows with plywood for a hurricane, get the wood and fasteners in advance and store it in your garage.
